Case Highlights
Buckingham Heavy Transport completed a complex 100-mile transport from port to substation, delivering a 305,782-lb transformer safely to its pad. Since the unit was too wide to be brought close to the site by rail, Buckingham coordinated a multi-stage transport plan using specialized hauling configurations to comply with permitting and infrastructure restrictions.

After loading the transformer via crane onto a Goldhofer trailer at the port, Buckingham transported it from the port to a spot on the MD/PA line where crews installed wing dollies to meet weight-distribution requirements for bridge crossings. The first stage of the move was conducted overnight, navigating urban interstates from the port to a holding area.

For the second stage, Buckingham covered the remaining 37 miles through rural Pennsylvania. Along the route, crews installed and removed the wing dollies to accommodate bridge load limits. At the substation, Buckingham transloaded the transformer to a smaller Goldhofer SPMT to maneuver within the site.

After positioning alongside the pad, Buckingham used their jack & slide system to move the transformer onto the pad, where they rotated it for final position.

Buckingham’s project management and permitting teams evaluated two primary delivery strategies: an extended overland route that crossed state lines, major interstates, multiple bridges, and congested narrow roadways or a shorter overland route that entailed partial transport by barge.

By leveraging custom equipment and a detailed logistics plan, Buckingham efficiently executed the overland option, significantly mitigating total project cost for the client while completing on-schedule delivery.
